New role to accelerate mission-critical projects

November, 2022

In a further step towards the next phase of growth, APAL has announced the appointment of Amy Larking, former-APAL General Counsel, to the newly created role of Head of Legal and Strategic Development.

“This role is important as we seek to progress and accelerate a number of key strategic initiatives,” says Andrew Hooke, APAL’s Chief Operating Officer, to whom the role will report.

Referencing several high-potential growth initiatives, including the development and implementation of a market strategy for manufactured products under the Pink Lady® brand, and further commercialisation of the Joya® brand, Andrew says: “Having someone focussed on these initiatives and with the requisite skill set is an exciting development.”

Accelerating the commercialisation of Joya® apples is a prime example of Amy’s new remit. While the Joya® brand has already been activated in Europe and South Africa, it remains underutilised as a brand in most other regions.

“Having demonstrated consumer potential Joya® now requires a consolidated global growth plan including development of licensing framework, royalty mechanisms and fully integrated global network, to deliver on its potential to grow value for growers, exporters and retailers.”

Pink Lady® manufactured products are another top priority for Amy: “Globally there has been a disparate approach to manufactured product featuring the Pink Lady® brand. Some early licenses have dropped-off, so this needs a dedicated resource and global coordination to reinvigorate and grow this revenue stream, further enhancing Pink Lady® apples’ brand presence.”

Of her recent appointment, Amy says: “I am excited to be entrusted with the global remit necessary to focus on a range of projects that will have a significant impact on the future of APAL and our commercial network of partners and business interests.”

In addition to her new strategic development responsibilities, Amy will continue in her role as Country Manager for Japan, seeking to build new market opportunities for domestic and imported fruit in that market.

Amy sees synchronicity between these dual roles, saying: “We suspect Pink Lady® may be an ideal product offering in Japan where consumers still largely view apples as a shared dessert, rather than a healthy, daily snack.” (Read more about the opportunities for Pink Lady® apples in Japan here.)

A recruitment process is currently underway to appoint a new Senior Legal Counsel – Global. The APAL legal team will continue to report into Amy.
